A Cypress Wonderland | back to my roots

It’s hard to describe how excited I was when my sister asked me to do her holiday card! Our family as been through a lot. Like….a lot. I will spare you alllll the details, but know that the woman in these photographs is my second mother. My older sister by 5.5 years, my phenotype twin (and my alpha-female twin), mother figure since I was 6 years old, and now 1 of 2 built in besties (shout out to my little sister and {almost} Irish twin). Little did Michelle know, that having me photograph her family was my chance to style, plan, shoot, and edit every pixel of her family – and give back a very small piece of the love that she has given me.

Her tween children were maybe underwhelmed by their loud, bossy Aunt in the middle of a bird watching sanctuary (sorry friends I have prompts to deliver and people to make laugh – the birds must come second today!) – and they were definitely embarrassed by all the hugging, kissing, touching, and extended pauses caused by passer-byers. It’s all part of what feels like the chaotic, over-the-top, she won’t get a single good shot photo session day experience – everyone can’t wait for it to be done! I get it. BUT I kept telling them: getting “over” dressed is worth it (ummm, we aren’t even going to talk about how my niece fits into a woman’s dress – we just aren’t), “over” planning is worth it, driving to a stunning location at sunset is worth it, making the kids do it even though they will hate you for a few hours is worth it. Then it comes…”I had no idea they would turn out this well”; “every single shot is amazing – they are all my favorites”; “thank you so much”, “I want to frame a bunch and even send them to my in-laws, can you help me with that.” Cue my tears – mission accomplished!!! And…. the last image of my niece twirling is just for the auntie sadness that comes with seeing her baby girl as a woman for the first time. I hope we have a new tradition – amongst many, many more! ❤️

Durham newborn and baby photographer | A look back at a Baby’s First Year Collection

Oh, baby! Getting to photograph this baby girl from belly to first birthday as part of her Baby’s First Year Collection was amazing. It’s hard to describe the gratification and joy it brings to see this family evolve and grow through their portraits.

Baby photography birthday newborn maternity

Scroll through to see some of my favorites from this family’s maternity, newborn, and 1st birthday session.

***

MATERNITY: It was a chilly November sunset, but mom and dad stuck it out and we got some beautiful outdoor images.

NEWBORN: just days old, Emily was alert and curious. After a good, long visit together, I got her to sleep and was able to get those sleepy, curly shots that newborn portraits are most known for!

1st BIRTHDAY: We had a magical, sunset and almost 70 degrees in February to celebrate her 1st birthday! Take a peek at some of my favorites from her session. And because it’s important, that vintage high chair and cake come with every 1st birthday experience!

Durham newborn photographer | a sunset field maternity session

The biggest compliment I receive is when clients return for baby 2, 3, 4 and on. I photographed baby Charley 2.5 years ago and she is now expecting a baby sister! Here you will find some of my favorite images from their field MATERNITY session.

Beach Family Session: Goodbye Summer!

Oh family sessions! What better way to welcome fall then to give summer a proper goodbye with a summer beach family session with my littles?! Photographing my family is always “special” (and by special I mean stressful, full of prayer, and feeling like I got zero good shots afterwards!), but as usual, I was proved wrong and captured many sweet, priceless and frame-worthy images on our Hilton Head Island trip this summer. My brave, wild, and free littles love the beach, so capturing them in one of their favorite places is special. I am intentionally NOT in the frames (I know, I know, but asking a random stranger to get our family shots AND do it just how I wanted wasn’t in the cards!), but I did get one at the end with their Dad that will certainly be printed for his office frame updates!

If you haven’t done a family session at the beach, next time you go, try it – it’s magic. There is a special connection to our Creator, your soul, and appreciation for your family that happens at the water. You can search on Instagram [with beach hashtags] or Google. Be sure the photographer has done beach sessions before and s/he picks the right time of day (this is key). And please, Lord, no flashes should be used! I prefer evenings, as people have largely cleared off the beach, which means less negotiation for your backgrounds and less editing out all those strangers! You also can get the dewy, glowing sunset if you plan the timing right (and it’s not cloudy, like in our case – ha!). You don’t want to go when the sun is high – harsh shadows, people are squinting, and it’s hotter whichs makes people sweaty (obvious, I know) and more likely to be grumpy. Plan your wardrobe before you leave home (you know where I am going with this – flowing NEUTRALS!!! ) and you are off!

Tell me your favorites in the comments below! and, thank you for joining me in saying farewell to summer…..

Summer Bucket List ~ 2019

I looked up and realized summer is just a little more than half way – wait, what!?!? This magical, sun-soaked, night-time exploring summer full of finger panting and pillow fights has felt more like the school year – frantic mornings getting out of the house, driving to and from camps, appointments galore, and the rat race we often can’t avoid during school. I remember saying in May, “I love summer because it’s a chance to slow down”. Well….I realized it had not been what I imagined – at least so far. Or maybe I wasn’t imagining anything specifically and I needed a little direction and realignment. Or, maybe, I needed to slow down and remember what my heart’s priorities are. I think all of the above.

So, thank you again Pintrest, I went searching for a Summer Bucket List. This is our first one and I must say – the kids are EXPLODING with excitement. And this one is GOOOOOOD. It has a little bit of everything – food, fun, togetherness, outdoors and indoors, service, love, and whimsy. So, I printed it, posted it on the ‘fridge, made a list of their morning and afternoon routines/chores, and told them that when they finish their afternoon responsibilities each day, they can pick ANYTHING from the list (as long as we aren’t traveling to the beach in California on the same day we have basketball camp…lol). Well, let me just say the next morning, my son had made his bed, fed the dog, packed up his bag for camp, and we were at camp dropping off 15 minutes early without ANY prodding (#neverhappens). So, I think this list will bless us, help me reinforce responsibility and whimsy, and redeem my summer dreams. If you try it out – come back here and let us know how it went!

The Gold Hope Project | Meet Soren

When I first read about the Gold Hope Project (TGHP) in Oprah magazine, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. This network of professional photographers volunteers their time and talents to gift pediatric cancer patients and their families with portrait sessions at any stage in their fight with cancer. Sometimes, we hear of stories where the TGHP session images are the first or last photographs a family has of their little fighter – a gift that becomes even more meaningful. Volunteering with TGHP certainly was a good fit professionally, as I love children and love to photograph them. But it is also a good fit personally; when I was six years old my family lost our mother and wife to breast cancer. We’ve since lost numbers of other family members to cancer, as so many of us have; so this mission and service has a personal motivation as well.

I was contacted about this little 2 year old fighter last summer and was delighted to know I could share myself with this family. We waited until Soren was discharged from the hospital to schedule the session – and we were blessed with a gorgeous, overcast (a photographer’s dream!), 60 degree day in early December. Soren was like many toddlers that I love so much – clear on where he wanted to go, always moving, and SO excited to be outside. He took us on a tour of Duke Hospital and it’s beautiful outside spaces, that he and his mom are all too familiar with, and we captured some magical moments.

Some of my favorites from our session are below. You can read more about Soren, his fight with cancer, & his story on the TGHP BLOG.

I want to thank all of our First 28 Photography clients from the bottom of my heart for joining me in this effort. The support and growth that we see as our client families grow contributes to the opportunity for me to gift my time, portraits, and photographs to families like Soren, something I hope we can all feel extra joy about!

EMPOWER ME!

I had the opportunity to do another dance photography session with the amazing Empower Dance Studio in downtown Durham. Every.single.time I am in this studio I cry. The spirit of these beautiful girls and their amazing leaders; the music they play, that not only makes your body move, but also your soul; the tremendous vision and leadership in their owner/director – Nicole, her sister Jaime, and her team, move me.  So, when I am in their midst I feel like I am selfishly taking in all of this wonderful energy and experience – but it’s really a gift. And when I get the chance to begin editing, that feeling only multiplies. Their energy emits from my computer, all the while I smile like a little girl in a candy store with each image I edit.

I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to stretch my creative muscle; to partner with a growing, local business that is community-oriented with a service mission; and to contribute, even if in a small way, to the success and advancement of their vision. They truly live up to their name.  Thank you Empower for the honor of another great session!

Hurricane Preparation List!!

A friend shared this with me and I had to pass it along. Please be safe – prayers going up for all those in Florence’s path!

FOR THOSE IN THE PATH OF HURRICANE FLORENCE

This is the most comprehensive list I’ve seen so far! Be prepared!

1. Charge any device that provides light. Laptops, tablets, cameras, video cameras, and old phones. Old cell phones can still used for dialing 911. Charge external battery back ups.

2. Wash all trash cans, big and small, and fill with water for flushing toilets. Line outdoor trash cans with trash bags, fill with water and store in the garage. Add bleach to sterilize.

3. Fill every tub and sink with water. Cover sinks with Saran Wrap to keep it from collecting dust. Fill washing machine and leave lid up to store water.

4. Fill old empty water bottles and other containers with water and keep near sinks for washing hands.

5. Fill every Tupperware with water and store in freezer. These will help keep food cold longer and serve as a back up water supply.

6. Fill drinking cups with water and cover with Saran Wrap. Store as many as possible in fridge. The rest you can store on the counter and use first before any water bottles are opened. Ice is impossible to find after the storm.

7. Reserve fridge space for storing tap water and keep the sealed water bottles on the counter.

8. Cook any meats in advance and other perishable foods. You can freeze cooked food. Hard boil eggs for snacks for first day without power.

9. Be well hydrated before the storm hits and avoid salty foods that make you dehydrated.

10. Wash all dirty clothes and bed sheets. Anything dirty will smell without the A/C, you may need the items, and with no A/C, you’ll be sweating a lot. You’re going to want clean sheets.

11. Toss out any expiring food, clean cat litter boxes, empty all trash cans in the house, including bathrooms. Remove anything that will cause an odor when the A/C is off. If you don’t have a trash day pickup before the storm, find a dumpster.

12. Bring in any yard decor, secure anything that will fly around, secure gates, bring in hoses, potted plants, etc. Bring in patio furniture and grills.

13. Clean your environment so you have clear, easy escape routes. Even if that means temporarily moving furniture to one area.

14. Scrub all bathrooms so you are starting with a clean odor free environment. Store water filled trash cans next to each toilet for flushing.

15. Place everything you own that is important and necessary in a backpack or small file box that is easy to grab. Include your wallet with ID, phone, hand sanitizer, snacks, etc. Get plastic sleeves for important documents.

16. Make sure you have cash on hand.

17. Stock up on pet food and fill up bowls of water for pets.

18. Refill any medications. Most insurance companies allow for 2 emergency refills per year.

19. Fill your propane tanks. You can heat soup cans, boil water, make coffee, and other stuff besides just grilling meat. Get an extra, if possible.

20. Drop your A/C in advance and lower temperatures in your fridges.

21. Gather all candles, flashlights, lighters, matches, batteries, and other items and keep them accessible.

22. Clean all counters in advance. Start with a clean surface. Buy Clorox Wipes for cleaning when there is no power. Mop your floors and vacuum. If power is out for 10 days, you’ll have to live in the mess you started with.

23. Pick your emergency safe place such as a closet under the stairs. Store the items you’ll need in that location for the brunt of the storm. Make a hand fan for when the power is out.

24. Shower just before the storm is scheduled to hit.

25. Keep baby wipes next to each toilet. Don’t flush them. It’s not the time to risk clogging your toilet!

26. Run your dishwasher, don’t risk having dirty smelly dishes and you need every container for water! Remember you’ll need clean water for brushing your teeth, washing yourself, and cleaning your hands.

27. Put a small suitcase in your car in case you decide to evacuate. Also put at least one jug of water in your car. It will still be there if you don’t evacuate! You don’t need to store all water in the house. Remember to pack for pets as well.

28. Check on all family members, set up emergency back up plans, and check on elderly neighbors.

29. Remember, pets are family too. Take them with you!

30. Before the storm, unplug all electronics. There will be power surges during and after the storm.

31. Gas up your car and have a spare gas container for your generator or your car when you run out.

If you can, take a video of your house and contents….walk room to room–open cabinets/drawers and closets.  This will help if you need to make a claim later.  It will show proof of items and help you list all the items (help your memory, so you don’t forget anything)…I highly recommend!!!

I also heard you should freeze a cup of water, place a coin on top after it is frozen…keep this in your freezer to help you gauge the temperature if the power goes out.  If the coin stays on top, the food is staying frozen.  If the coin falls into the water, the freezer thawed out and most food will likely need to be thrown away.  This is super helpful is you have to leave and come back, as it may appear everything is still frozen, but if the coin is in the cup–you will know!!

Finally, anything that you want to try and preserve, but you can’t take with you—place it in a plastic bin and put in your dishwasher, lock the door—this should make it water tight in case of any water intrusion into your home.  But of course, take all the important/irreplaceable items you can!!

Stay Safe everyone!
